Using natural flea remedies can keep your pets safe from the negative effects of prescription flea medicines and help them live a healthier life.
Our four legged family members are important to us. We want to do everything in our power to ensure they live a happy, healthy life. One of the biggest annoyances they face are fleas. These pests can cause irritation and spread disease to our beloved animals, so it is important to have a solution that can help to soothe the effects of these creatures. Fortunately, there are a few combinations of all natural ingredients that won’t harm our pets, while allowing them to find some relief from these pests.
The first is a “flea collar”. Some people have this need to have something around their pet’s neck to ensure that they are “protected” at all times. This natural alternative to the traditional collar will help. All you need is your pet’s collar. Take three tablespoons of water and mix it with 3 – 5 drops of cedar oil. Use 3 drops for a small animal, 4 drops for a medium sized animal and 5 drops for a large animal. Then rotate the collar in the mixture until it becomes saturated, then allow it to dry. This will provide your pet with a week’s worth of flea protection without having to invest in chemicals.
Another solution is adding a little Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar. In this case, brand is important because of how it is processed. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of the mixture for every 10 pounds your pet is to a quart of water. Then allow them to drink the mixture. This will improve their skin and coat, while also helping to protect them further from fleas.
If your pet hates collars and refuses to drink the mixture, you’re in luck. There is another option. Lemons contain a natural ingredient limonene. This is a natural substance you can only activate by taking the lemon and cutting it in half, then boil both halves in a pot of water. Then allow the mixture to steep overnight with a covered lid on the stove. Do not put this in the fridge. In the morning, check the temperature to ensure it is room temperature. You can take this mixture then and comb it through the hair of your dog. This will repel fleas naturally, without bringing any harm to them along the way. Keep this mixture on hand if you want to add a flea bath later on. Just add in a ½ cup of fresh water to the mixture and a mild hypoallergenic all natural pet friendly soap. You can then bathe using this as a rinse. It will work just like a flea bath, without all the harsh chemicals soaking into your pet’s skin.
Sometimes you’ve done everything you can do and your pet needs a little something extra. In this case, you want to blend a cup of white vinegar with a cup of apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and add a quart of water to it. Then add 2 drops of cedar oil to the mixture. You can spray this mixture on the “hot spots” the fleas leave. These are the areas of irritation that your dog nibbles at. Not only will it repel the insects from the area, but it will also help to soothe your pet’s skin. Just be sure to not spray it directly into their face, as it can irritate their eyes.
As you can see, there are a few solutions for natural flea remedies for your dogs and cats. Take the time to consider each of your options and do what you can to keep them healthy and happy.
